In the Democratic Republic of Congo, hundreds of thousands of women have suffered war crimes. During the four years of war, the soldiers systematically raped women, mutilated them or even made them sex slaves, just to humiliate and chase away their enemies. Although peace was made in 2002, the women are still abused and suffer under enslavement, concision and other bodily and mental harm. These traumatized women lack medical-gynaecological care, psychological help, basic supplies and spaces, in which they feel safe and able to talk about their terrible experiences. Together with local women organizations, medica mondiale supports these women with medical and psychological care.
