Grameen Shakti
Bangladesh

Information

Grameen Shakti has enabled thousands of Bangladeshi villages the access to reliable energy supply and a sustainable lighting system. In addition to the installation of solar plants, the GS offers extensive education to the local people. The qualified participants can therefore promote and support the solar energy distribution better. More then 4.000 solar plants are being installed monthly in the rural areas of Bangladesh. The improved lightning increases the security on the villages, especially for the women and is also less dangerous then the widely-used kerosene lamps. Therefore, this social enterprise promotes the health, education and productivity of the country.

But solar projects are not the only work done by Grameen Shakti. There are other projects such as the biogas program, the development of organic fertilizers as well as a wind energy program. Grameen Shakti has also established solar-energy powered computer schools that help to improve further education.

The rural population especially benefits from the biogas program. Instead of using the dung as a fuel, which is regarded health concerning, it is processed into clean biogas. A byproduct of the process is a fertilizer, which then can be used in agriculture. This therefore helps to protect the forest - in a country where the increasing deforestation and clearing for new cropland is gradually becoming a bigger problem.

"It is a undeniable fact, that the energy supply construction, now and in the future, will only be possible with renewable energies", says the president of Grameen Shakti. "But all efforts must be made to supply those, who suffer most from the energy crises, with access to these new and sustainable energy supply systems. Only then, can we solve the economical and social problems of this planet."

In Bangladesh rural electrification through solar PV technology is becoming more popular, day by day. Solar Home Systems (SHSs) are highly decentralized and particularly suitable for remote, inaccessible areas. GS's solar program mainly targets those areas, which have no access to conventional electricity and little chance of getting connected to the power supply.
